Knowing your Twist from your Loop carpets

Choosing the right carpet for your room is crucial in creating your dream home, and a huge part of that is the quality.

There are a few carpet construction types, but the two main ones are twist and loop piles.

Twist Pile Carpet

Twist Pile Carpets are constructed of twisted yarns, cut to a certain length - generally giving them a softer, spongier texture. You may have come across the very common 'Saxony Carpets' - a Twist Pile with longer fibres, giving it a thicker feel and consequently making them a lovely option for super plush living rooms or bedrooms .

Loop Pile Carpet

Loop pile / Berber carpets are comprised of looped yarn, making them generally more hard-wearing and durable. Do be careful with loop pile carpets if you have pets, particularly cats, as loop piles can occasionally get pulled up by little claws. However, this quality works brilliantly on stairs, as their short pile reduces potential flattening, in heavy traffic areas, over time. 

Underlay

Choosing the right underlay to pair with your carpet can always make a significant difference on feel and longevity. For example, if you wanted to add a bit more luxury to a shorter pile carpet, a thicker underlay could give you that extra bounce.
